Brain injury is caused by hard blows to the brain. The crushed or fractured skull that allows an outside object to penetrate or rip the soft brain tissue is sometime life threatening.
Open or closed brain injury can be both very damaging. Both can lead to extensive hospital stay and or extensive home care and therapy.
Types of Brian Injuries
The most common is a concussion. It may be that someone loses consciousness in an accident or even just feel dazed. Whip lash can also lead to a concussion but may not be treated properly because the injured person may be released before they get fully treated. These treatments can take anywhere to months, years, or possibly damaged for life.
Contusion- When bruising or bleeding in the brain and needs to be surgically remove.
Coup-Contrecoup- This is when there is bruising on both sides of the brain. On one side it is because of the direct impact and on the other side it's because the brain was moved to and hit the side of the skull, leading to both being bruised.
Diffused Axonal- This is caused when there is shaking or rotation of the head. It can cause nerve shredding which can impair the way the brain works.
Penetration-Objects traveling at a low rate of speed through the skull and brain can ricochet within the skull, which widens the area of damage. A “through-and-through” injury occurs if an object enters the skull, goes through the brain, and exits the skull. Through-and-through traumatic brain injuries include the effects of penetration injuries, plus additional shearing, stretching and rupture of brain tissue. (Brumback R. (1996).
