Big Truck Accident Statistics

According to the NHTSA and reported by Trucker, big truck accidents in 2017 resulting in death were at the highest level since 2007, and up over 8% from 2016.  The highest percentage of increase in accidents were pedestrian deaths, which rose by 9%.  Drunk-driving, speeding, unbelted, and motorcycle accident related deaths from big truck accidents also rose in 2017.

The FMCSA reports that there were 119,000 injury crashes in 2016 involving large trucks or buses. It states that from 2009 till 2015 the number of crashes rose 62% to a total of 97,000. Over the past reporting year, the number of crashes for large trucks or buses rose by more than 20% in just one year.

These statistics are staggering and scary.  They represent a real fear that most folks have when driving next to or near a semi-truck.  Those huge commercial big rigs seem almost immune to damage while smaller passenger cars can be devastated with a simple impact.  Although most big truck drivers are skilled professionals that take serious care and pride in their driving ability, accidents still happen.
