Top 10 Biggest Accidents in 2018

Accidents can happen at any time, but in 2018 there were some big ones.  In fact, one of the biggest accidents in history for fatalities happened this year and will most likely change some regulations about driving in limos. According to the NSC, the number of fatal deaths by car accident reached 40,000 in 2017, a slight dip from 2016.  However, those numbers don’t show much progress as 2017 is still 6% higher than in 2015 and is the second year in a row with over 40,000 car accident deaths.  Four and half million people were involved in an accident in 2017 totaling over $4 billion dollars in damages.  That’s a lot of claims.Early stats are showing some improvement for 2018 with a slight dip in the number of car accident deaths.  The Insurance Journal reported that the NSC measured just over 18,000 accidents in the first half of 2018, measuring a 0.5% drop from 2017.

Top 10 worst car accidents in 2018

1. 20 people were killed in a car accident when a limousine crashed back in October of this year. NBC reports that the limo had failed several safety inspections and the driver was not properly licensed to operate the vehicle.  The driver failed to stop at an intersection and rammed into another vehicle causing the collision.

2. 3 kids were killed at a bus stop when a driver ran into them instead of stopping for the bus while the lights were on.  The 3 siblings were killed while trying to cross the street to get to the bus, as reported by Indy Star.

3. 1 pedestrian was killed when an Uber self-driving car struck the woman who was walking on the side of the road.  It marked the first time a self-driving car was involved in a fatal car accident.

4. A man was killed while riding an electric scooter.  It’s still unclear what happened to the man and if he was struck by another vehicle or if the scooter itself was the cause of the death, as WP reports.

5. St. Petersberg reports that over 40 people have died in car accidents in 2018, marking the deadliest year on record.

6. 2 Ex-MLB players were killed in a car accident following a national game in December.  The two were killed when they tried to avoid some sliding rocks, only to swerve off the road.

7. 45 cars were tangled up in a major car accident in Florida during the summer.  No one was killed, but the event took many hours to sort out with over 25 police officer to help get all of the details.

8. 9 people were killed in car accidents during a snowstorm early in the year in Iowa, a report by Des Moines Register.

9. 2 folks died when their SUV was slammed into by a train.  Police believe the driver didn’t see the stop signs and proceeded onto the tracks while the train was approaching.

10. A 10-year-old girl was killed in Texas when her vehicle ran into a semi-truck during a rainstorm. The girl was the daughter of the local prosecutor, who was also in the car during the accident.
