When you are in an accident it is a good idea to call the police. The reason being is they try to collect as much information as they can. At times when someone is very injured they do not able to stay and wait to collect the incident report number because they are being rushed to the hospital if that happens you will be able to give them you name, date, and location of the accident so they may be able to find it in that manner. If one is not at seriously injured at the time they may stay and wait for the police to finish his/her report. In the report they collects names, insurance police, do a sketch of the seen, collect witnesses statements ect... Police reports consist of facts and opinions.
There are 2 ways to collect a police report.
1 . My Mail
The first way, by mail- you first need to find the police agency that took the report, go online download and print the request form for the police report – fill it out and you may have to pay a fee of $15 or so in the mail for the report.
The second way online- you must fill out the order form, put in the incident number and pay the fee that they charge to receive your police report.
If you lose the incident report or did not get one because you were taken to the hospital, you will have to produce your name, date, time, and location of the accident.
To obtain a free copy of the report you can ask the claims representative from your own insurance for a copy if they have attained one. It is not all the time insurance companies have this report but if they do it will save you some time and money.
Please allow a few weeks for the police report to be typed up and approved. Each police agency have certain proto calls they have to follow before this issue it out to the persons’ involved in the accident.
